IMGP4770News From the Field

IMGP4765This week marks the middle of the regular season! Can you believe that it’s already mid-August? I can’t! I have been taking the same photo of the fields almost every week this season and as you can see the crops are filling in the bottom portion of the photo now! Your leeks and parsley are looking great!

Farm owner Chris Overbaugh sent in some photos from the fields this morning, a lovely one of the sunrise over the crew harvesting, and the newly sprouted Sudan grass, a cover crop we grow on the farm.

sudangrasssudangrass2Tyson sent in some photos of the carrot and beet harvest. Carrots are my favorite vegetable to harvest. I love pulling the beautiful orange roots out of the ground and bunching them. They smell wonderful, sweet and earthy, and taste the best right out of the ground!

With all of this warm, or should I just come out and say HOT weather we’ve been having, the warm weather crops are really sizing up. You should be seeing peppers in your box soon, and the corn is almost ready to harvest! I know we’re all very excited about that.

This weekend Jack Gray, our farmer/owner who manages the beef herd, will be offering another Cow & Pasture Tour. The tour will be this Saturday, August 16th….the hayride will leave the barn area about 10:30 AM and take you for a tour of the farm, looking at our cow herd and pasture, explaining our management techniques and philosophies. You will be able to ask questions and learn about our grass fed organic beef shares as well. Reservations are encouraged…just email/call the farm if you would like to reserve a seat on the haywagon….541-935-1920 or [email protected]. If you can’t make the tour this Saturday, there will be a third, and final tour for this season, on Saturday, September 6th, also at 10:30 AM. Feel free to reserve your seat on that tour if you like!

This week I heard from a woman named Letitia Elizabeth, who asked me to share her new online Pick Me Meal Club. She explains it as a “one of a kind online meal planner for those interested in local seasonal eating”. They work with renowned chefs to craft wonderfully wholesome and creative plant-based meal ideas that get delivered to your inbox each week.  Now, they are offering to put together menus and meal plans specific to your CSA box.  To find out more, you can visit their website at http://pickmemealplan.com and mention Winter Green Farm CSA for a 50% discount on any meal plan membership! If you decide to join, please do let us know how you like it!

We all hope that you are enjoying your veggies this season and we look forward to the bounty continuing to come in from the fields. Don’t forget to share your favorite recipes with us, to share with your fellow members!
Blessings,
Sara
