I’m taking over the writing of the Blog for Sara this week, so she can attend Ella Mae’s first day at her new pre-school…she is so lucky to be attending the pre-school where her Grandma is the teacher! As we head into this week’s delivery, I’m sure you can all feel the transitions taking place….summer vacations behind us, school about to begin, temps cooling somewhat and the leaves are already beginning to turn a bit. On the farm, we are feeling the transitions in many ways also. The summer crops of zucchinis and berries are coming to a close, and the fall/winter crops are getting ready to harvest for you. We are also transitioning crew members…several are heading back to school, or some other adventure and new crew have been hired to take over their tasks. Tyson Davies, long term farm crew of 10 years, will begin his Graduate studies at the University of Oregon in the Sustainable Business program. We will all miss his smiling face, upbeat attitude and overall presence at the farm, but wish him all the best on his new journey. I have been fortunate to have a little help from a “new” crew member in the office…I think she’s going to be a natural….
It’s exciting to see the Fall/Winter crops sizing up and we’re beginning to harvest the bulk carrots as well…won’t be long before the crew is enjoying tossing Winter Squash to each other. I took a walk around the farm last week and the squash and pumpkins look amazing….this hot weather has many of the crops ripening up early for sure.
I recently sent out the 2014 about our organic, grass fed beef. If you would like to receive the info, please let me know. This Saturday, September 6th, Jack will offer the final Cow & Pasture tour for this season…if you’ve ever wondered about our pasture and cow management, this would be a great time to visit the farm, take a hayride and Jack will explain our management techniques and philosophies. The tour will begin at 10:30am.
The Oregon State Extension service of Lane County asked if I would share the information about their Fall Festival with you all. The even will be held on Saturday, September 27th from 11am-4pm at the Emerald Park Recreation Center in Eugene. The Master Gardeners will offer talks on Four Season Gardening, Edible Alliums, Backyard Bees, Home Orchards and more. There will be fresh pressed apple cider, a Tomato tasting contest, books, bulbs and baked goods for sale, as well as handmade & recycled art for your garden. Sounds like a fun day…for more information you can call 541-344-5859.
I am also preparing the information for our Late Season, which will begin after the Standard Season ends mid October. If you have been enjoying the season so far and would like to continue on up to the week before Thanksgiving, just give me a call/email at the farm office and I can give you the details.
